The Girl with No Soul by Morgan Owen

With great pleasure I’m going to tell you about a fantastic budding author: Morgan Owen.

Morgan Owen is really fantastic for at least three reasons:

- she’s fantastic because she is a fantastic writer;

- she’s fantastic because she writes fantasy novels, that are fantastic, of course;

Her debut novel, released in 2022 and published in Italy in 2023, is titled The Girl with No Soul

and in fact it is a dystopian novel disguised as a young adult fantasy fiction. The plot revolves around the adventures of a girl with no soul who goes around the streets of Providence, succeeding in being unnoticed thanks to this feature, and who steals memories for the Countess.

Iris, that’s the name of the protagonist, has neither a soul nor a past, that prevents her to feel those emotions that she desperately longs for, such as the love for a mother or for a partner or the melancholy for someone who is not here anymore. These souls are really important in Providence because they provide the identity card for any of the inhabitants, and if a soul is judged corrupted by the Order, it might be reformed, purified or, even worse, destroyed. Thanks to the study of the anatomy of the soul, centuries ago in Providence they found out that the soul could be divided into five parts, and they have five corresponding aristocratic houses that all together form the Order.

Thanks to the Eyes of the Obscura, the most powerful house, all the souls are spied and controlled constantly…

We’ll follow the adventures of Iris and of other young heroes in this mean dictatorial world. I assure that you’ll hold your breath till the end.

The protagonist is really charming and you can’t help falling for her, thanks to her fighting character, proud and very sweet as well; also the people she will bump into during her adventures will prove friendly and interesting.

The story is fluent, but there is a lot of food for thought: would we be ourselves without our souls? Would we make the same choices and love the same people, or not?

I’d like to praise the author for the characters’ names chosen: they’re all wonderful and evocative.

The story is original and well planned.

I’ll tell you more: I’ve even appreciated the final thanks, which touched me, and which show the great humbleness of this young writer. And that’s the reason why I’ve already ordered this book in its English version, together with its sequel, The Boy with the Haunted Heart. I’m looking forward to re-reading this wonderful novel in its original language, and to learning what will happen next.

I libri di Kerry: La Senzanima di Morgan Owen

Ed è con immenso piacere che oggi vi parlerò di una fantastica autrice emergente: Morgan Owen.

Morgan Owen è davvero fantastica per almeno tre motivi:

- fantastica perché scrive benissimo;

- fantastica perché scrive romanzi fantasy, quindi fantastici;

Il suo romanzo d’esordio, uscito nel 2022, e pubblicato in Italia nel 2023, si intitola appunto La Senzanima,

ed è in realtà un distopico travestito da young adult fantasy. La trama ruota attorno alle vicende di una ragazza “senz’anima” che si aggira per le strade di Providence, riuscendo a passare inosservata grazie proprio a questa sua caratteristica, e ruba ricordi al soldo della Contessa.

Iris, questo il nome della protagonista, non possiede un’anima e nemmeno un passato, condizione che le impedisce di provare quei sentimenti che tanto brama, come l’affetto per una madre, l’amore per un partner, la malinconia per qualcuno che non c’è più. 

Eppure le anime sono fondamentali a Providence, poiché costituiscono la carta d’identità di ciascuno degli abitanti, e se un’anima viene giudicata corrotta dall’Ordine, potrà essere riformata, purificata o, peggio ancora, distrutta. Grazie allo studio dell’anatomia dell’anima, secoli prima a Providence scoprirono che la stessa poteva essere divisa in cinque parti, a cui corrispondono le cinque casate aristocratiche che tutte insieme formano l’Ordine. 

E grazie agli Occhi degli Obscura, la casata attualmente più potente, tutte le anime vengono spiate e controllate costantemente…

Seguiremo quindi le avventure di Iris e di altri giovani eroi in questo gretto mondo dittatoriale. Vi assicuro che resterete con il fiato sospeso fino alla fine. 

La protagonista è davvero molto affascinante e si fa voler bene fin da subito, grazie alla sua indole combattiva, fiera ed al tempo stesso molto tenera; anche i personaggi che incontrerà nel corso delle sue avventure sapranno mostrarsi affabili e decisamente interessanti. 

La storia scorre fluida, eppure sono molti gli spunti di riflessione che offre: saremmo sempre noi stessi senza la nostra anima? Finiremmo comunque per fare le scelte già fatte ed amare le stesse persone, oppure no?

Vorrei inoltre fare un plauso all’autrice per la scelta dei nomi: tutti splendidi ed estremamente evocativi.

La storia risulta davvero originale e ben costruita.

Vi dirò di più: ho persino apprezzato i ringraziamenti finali, che mi hanno commossa, e che rivelano la grande umiltà di questa giovane scrittrice. Motivo per cui ho già ordinato questo libro nella sua versione inglese, The Girl with No Soul, insieme al suo seguito, purtroppo non ancora pubblicato in Italia, The Boy with the Haunted Heart. Non vedo l’ora che arrivino per poter rileggere questo meraviglioso romanzo nella sua lingua originale, e per sapere cosa accadrà dopo.
